20070203 (Sat.) –  visiti to CLP’s Pumped Storage Power Station at CongHua

The World’s Largest Pumped Storage Power Station in Conghua, Guangdong

After four hours of travelling on train and coach, I and my fellow travellers were somewhat tired and dizzy from the constant motion. All proved to be worthwhile as  when we arrived at the blue lake in a resort type of setting with a glimpse of its undulating hills at the background, we felt energized by the fresh air and the relaxed natural environment.

We were greeted by Mr. CP Yuen, the First Deputy Station Manager of the Guangzhou Pumped Storage Power Station ( GPSPS ) who just took up the position since 8th Jan 2007. His role is to supervise the whole plant. Mr. Yuen is very knowledgeable of the whole operation and said that the Plant was planned some 17 years ago, in conjunction with the Guangdong Daya Bay Nuclear Power Project in order to enhance the safe and reliable operation of the nuclear power station. It is now the largest pumped storage power station in the world which supports the Guangdong and CLP’s power systems.

The 2,400 megawatt (MW) facility has a 535 metres (m) head and eight 300 MW power generation units. The pumped storage power station is capable of absorbing surplus power from the nuclear power station during the night trough (low demand) and releasing power for handling the daytime peak load (high demand).
The Plant can thus complement the Daya Bay nuclear power station, the surplus electricity from which is used to pump water to the upper reservoir, to be released to supply electricity during peak periods by running the water to the lower reservoir and hydro-power generation. The response time of this pumped storage Power station is the fastest among all types, and is totally environmentally friendly. It does not produce harmful pollutants like some traditional power stations that we knew of.

The site in Conghua was well chosen as it has the ideal geological condition, with quality granite rock bed which would keep water but also with few fault lines. It has natural valleys that readily formed into upper and lower reservoirs with a head difference and a good catchment area. The site has two inclined headrace tunnels which take the water from the upper reservoir to the lower reservoir and vice versa. They posed significant civil engineering work and challenges because the tunnels, each of 9m in diameter and total lengths of 1975m and 1974m respectively, are set at a 50-degree incline to the horizontal.  Water seepage is usually the biggest worry in underground structures but on the external to the two tunnels and the main plant underground structures are equipped with pressure taps which are connected to monitoring points that keeps track of civil work movements, underground leakage and subterranean pressure. So far, little problem of water leakage has been reported.

A total of eight turbines, which are reversible, form the powerhouse. The turbines can operate at a differential head of more than 535m and a speed of 500 rpm to absorb or generate 300 MW of electricity each. The pumped storage system has an overall efficiency of 75%, namely 75 units of energy could be re-generated and pumped back to the power system from 100 units absorbed from the nuclear power station. The GPSPS employs the state of art type of control technology to supervise the functions of the plant. According to the normal staff level of power stations in China, GPSPS would have employed 4,000 staff to run the plant but the actual number of staff now is about 140. I observed that the plant itself was completely unmanned. I later learned that it is operated by remote control from control centres in Hong Kong and Guangzhou.

In the end, I was so glad to have such an opportunity to visit a scenic spot and learn about the World’s largest pumped storage hydroelectric plant. No wonder it becomes the national most popular learning ground for similar projects in the country. The GPSPS deserves to be the “First Class Power Station” and a protected tourist scenic spot in Guangdong.

By Sean Wynell-Mayow, 14 years old.
